HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
We hope you and your family enjoyed a restful Thanksgiving! We enjoyed the time at home with family and friends. I was able to pickup some tools and wood during the sales events - and surprisingly had great experiences frequenting stores and shopping. Traffic in our area was bearable and relatively calm - which is rare for the Atlanta area. It is always great to have the Thanksgiving Break each year to be able to stop and think of all we have to be thankful for in our lives.
You will be surprised at how much power giving thanks has over negative comments, tough situations, difficult circumstances, and injury / pain. Developing an attitude of thankfulness is a long term investment that neutralizes the immediate effects of life events and helps you endure their lasting impact. We all need to be reminded of how truly great we have it - Is your health good?, are you mobile?, can you speak and hear?, do you have full use of your limbs?, do you have people in your life that care about you?, do you have a place to sleep tonight? Dwelling on these things helps to put our circumstances into perspective and prevent them form defining how we feel. Anytime material possesions become more important than people and those near to us - we have a problem. Being thankful - for anything - takes your mind off the negatives and helps you to refocus your efforts on the tasks at hand. Don't give up or doubt it - just give it a try. It takes a couple of times to develop a habit. You will definitely feel challenged and silly so expect it and dismiss those distractors. Push on and give thanks to God - calmness and a sense of His mercy, grace, and Peace will follow.
You want your attitude of giving thanks to kick-in just as an emergency generator would activate when a loss in permanent power is interrupted. These generators have devices called automatic transfer switches which immediately divert the electrical load from the main power supply on to their own electrical supply - thus maintaining uninterrupted power. Just think of the last time you were at a hospital, public arena, or commercial building and you will recall all the critical electronic devices that need constant supply. Similarly, we have relationships and responsibilities that require our constant uninterrupted attention. A well developed attitude of Thankfulness is like our automatic transfer switch.
There are so many things that compete for our attention and require our immediate input or reaction, that we sometimes drain ourselves of the resources to handle the flood of situations we often times find ourselves concurrently navigating. Telling God what you are thankful for helps you to overcome, accomplish more, and be an example to others in dealing with difficulties.
